Tournament: Toyota Thailand Open 2021
Status: HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1000
Date: 19-24 January 2021
Men Singles:
How can I start….
Viktor Axelsen (Yonex Astrox 100 ZZ, BG-80 string, 75th Power Cushion 65 Z 2) made it look easy. The tall Dane from Denmark did not drop a set throughout the tournament.. Nineteen points is the closest opponents got for a chance to take a set, from a superb playing Axelsen.
Viktor won over his fellow compatriot Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, who was simply exhausted, from all the hard matches before. Vittinghus played fantastic and what a great result for him to clinch the silver medal in Bangkok!! To close the men's singles I just wanted to highlight that Viktor even won two tournaments 1000’s in a row…. I really think that the best Yonex badminton racket; Astrox 100 ZZ is the most powerful racket on the market for sure hahaha..
Women Singles:
And then we have European badminton player number two on this list… Carolina Marin (Yonex Nanoflare 700, Aerobite Boost, 75th Power Cushion Aerus Z Women) won this tournament back-to-back too!!! Quite the same way as Viktor; all wins in straight sets…
Marin was relentless on court, raging like always, the Queen from Huelva had the same finalist as last week in Bangkok… Victor's Tai Tzu Ying fought for what she had but could not secure a set.
Carolina shouted (like last week), this is for you dad in Spanish… As her father passed away some time ago. Marin honored her father with two flawless tournaments of the highest status on the planet…
Men's Doubles:
Well we can go on with back-to-back winner three….(you can not believe the last disciplines hahaha)
Lee Yang (Yonex Nanoflare 800, BG-80 string, 75th Power Cushion 65 Z 2) won the finals convincing with partner Wang Chi Lin (Yonex Nanoflare 700, BG-80 string, Power Cushion Infinity)!!
The win over ‘the Daddies’ secured a spot in the finales like last week… And with the same outcome, victory in straight sets! This time versus Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik residing from Malaysia… Scores; 21-13 and 21-18!
Chinese Taipeh did a good job of selecting these two talented players together, because we will see them on podiums a lot more.. Although that is my prediction…
Really spectacular to see those fast net exchanges, outrageous defenses and brutal attacks as this will forever be the most dynamic discipline of all five!!!
Ladies Doubles:
Korea has always been a country representing a lot of legendary pairs in doubles badminton. In the finals were four ladies from Korea fighting for the gold medal… It was a close game, although played in straight sets.. But seeing the playing time; it was 56 minutes of grueling rallies on the TV court today!!
Kim So Yeong (Yonex Astrox 88S, BG66 Ultimax, 75th Power Cushion Aerus Z Women) and Kong Hee Yong (Yonex Duora 10 LT, BG66 Ultimax, 75th Power Cushion Aerus Z) were the better pair this time.. They won with 21-18 and 21-19 !! Credit for Lee So Hee (Yonex Nanoflare 700, Aerobite, 75th Power Cushion 65 Z 2 women’s) and Shin Seung Chan (Yonex Nanoflare 700, Aerobite, 75th Power Cushion 65 Z 2 women’s) performing well and winning silver !!
Mixed Doubles:
Now If I told you the next winning pair winning two weeks in a row, you would not believe it right ?? Yes another pair won 2 tournament 1000’s in a row, early 2021…. Still young and so many times in semi-finals and runner’s up on ‘big tournaments’, Dechapol Puavaranukroh (Yonex Astrox 88S, BG65, SHB Power Cushion 65 Z 2) prevails alongside partner Sapsiree Taerattanachai (Yonex Astrox 88S, BG65, Power Cushion Aerus Z pink)
Well deserved with spectacular matches, sometimes three-setters with lots of thrilling rallies… 21-16 and 22-20 were the scores on the board, and the last match of the day.
Conclusion:
I have enjoyed so much this week of watching badminton… It feels great to see all the top world players perform again.. Yonex was supreme this week; 5 out of 5 wins in all categories!
The unbeatable status of Axelsen, Marin, Lee/Wang, Dechapol/Sapsiree in 2021 makes me very curious for upcoming events… Next week: another strong tournament; TOUR FINALS with the top 8 battling for crowning themselves champion of the circuit!!!
Thanks for reading, I certainly hope you enjoyed it!
