As a starting badminton player, it is very difficult to determine for yourself which badminton racket is most suitable for you. Fortunately, we can make it a little easier in your decision-making process. We at KW FLEX are there for everyone who plays badminton. So we are happy to give you personal advice, or you can easily choose a racket in this category.

Buying starting recreational rackets

If you want to buy a good badminton racket in one go as a starting badminton player, then you have come to the right place in this category. We also call this the transition class in terms of rackets, and it is most suitable for investing in a full carbon racquet as the first. We assume that as an adult you are reasonably careful with your racket and that you do not hit the ground, walls or the racket of your teammate. Do you think you are capable of this, then you can select a perfectly matching badminton racket in this category!

Advantages of carbon badminton rackets

The material carbon is very strong, but can also be very fragile. Fortunately, there are many advantages and the fragility is the only drawback.

The advantages of carbon are:

  1. Absorbs vibrations
  2. Offers more flexibility
  3. Can also be extremely stiff
  4. Strong material
  5. Light in weight

Be careful with your badminton racquet

As described above, you must handle your racket with care. This doesn't mean that you have to hold them with a velvet glove and that they can't take anything, but they are much more fragile compared to a tennis or squash racket. The reason for this is the thinner frame. But this also makes a badminton racket much lighter, approx. 70-100 grams. A squash or tennis racket can weigh as much as 200-300 grams. Of course this seems like a very small difference, but try it out for yourself and the difference is very noticeable.

The reason for this lower weight and thinner frame is the speed of the game. Badminton is a very explosive sport, in which responsiveness and speed are central. You have to be able to react quickly to your opponent and the court is smaller, and the shuttle goes faster than with squash or tennis. A lighter frame is easier to handle, which allows you to offer the opponent more resistance.

Based on which features to choose?

The badminton rackets selected by our expert in these categories were selected based on various characteristics. There are several variables that make it important to choose a particular racket. The most essential characteristics on which our badminton expert selects are: quality, materials used, flexibility, weight and price. Don't know yourself, which racket characteristics suit you? Ask our badminton expert for personal advice!

Flexibility badminton rackets

The flexibility is divided between stiff, medium flex and flexible. If you do not have that much strength, it is best to look for a more flexible badminton racquet. It will help you develop speed in your strokes. In addition, a flexible racket also absorbs more vibrations, so that they penetrate less into your arm and shoulder. This results in a lower chance of injuries when you are just starting out.

Do you already have enough power and do you want more control? Then it is best to choose a medium flexible badminton racket. (The stiffer the racket, the more control and accuracy you will have. However, this also means that mistakes are punished more quickly.)

Weight

The next important characteristic is the desired weight class. Depending on your style of play, you can make the right selection here. If you play a lot at the net, if you do a lot of doubles, if you are injury prone or if you just want to be very maneuverable, then a lighter badminton racket is recommended. Less weight = more maneuverability. If you are an offensive player, you play a lot in the backfield, and you are not injury-prone, it is better to choose a heavier racket. More weight = more power. Determine your style of play and what you need help with during the game. The racket is and remains an extension of you as a badminton player.

More expensive is not always better

The materials used determine the price for a big part, but the price should not always be leading. The beginners racquets (rackets for youth players) are not always made completely of carbon, because this makes the rackets more expensive and especially more vulnerable. The rackets for adults or older youth players are made completely out of carbon. The more technologies and more expensive materials (carbon) are used in a racket, the bigger the chance that it will punish your play if you don't know how to handle it. There is no guarantee that an expensive recreational badminton racket will improve your game. So be realistic with respect to your own level to find the right badminton racket.
